The Monira Foundation’s Special Projects Residency offers dedicated space and time for artists working in the performance, movement, and time-based disciplines, including dance, film, music, theater, and visual art related to movement. The residency is open to artists in the New Jersey/New York area and will take place at the Monira Foundation Gallery.     

From July 1 to August 30, 2026, an artist or collaborative group from the BAXTER ST alumni artists will be awarded two months of access to the gallery space (July 1 to August 1–30) to develop new work or continue existing projects. This opportunity provides artists with the time and space to support their creative practices that explore experimental approaches that defy art world definition.     

The Special Projects Residency includes: 

• A $500 stipend for the selected artist or collective.
• Access to a safe, private studio space with windows. The Monira Gallery measures 45 ft x 60 ft. 
• A sound system is available, and artists may bring their own music devices (with adaptors) to connect to the audio equipment.
• Residency promotion on Monira’s social media and communication channels during the residency.

Eligibility:  Applications are open to individual artists or collaborations working in the movement and time-based realm, including disciplines such as film, theater, and visual art related to movement. We welcome and encourage experimental practices that defy clear art world definitions. This residency emphasizes the artistic process without expecting a final presentation, though artists may choose to share their work if it aligns with their process. Please note that housing and transportation are not included.     

This opportunity is best suited for New Jersey/New York-based artists who: 

• Explore their interests and questions through thoughtful processes, and can articulate the context for their work.
• Are excited to share their work through the Monira Foundation and value dialogue with audiences as a meaningful part of their process.
• Are at least 18 years old, not currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program, and have not participated in a Monira Residency in the past year.

This residency aims to serve a wide and supportive community, supporting performers of all racial and cultural perspectives and abilities. The selection process involves a panel review with an invited curator, Monira staff, BAXTER ST Staff and former Resident Artists.   

Notifications of acceptance will be sent in May 2026.

Open Call Emerging independent curators are invited to submit exhibition proposals to be exhibited at BAXTER ST's gallery at 154 Ludlow Street New York, NY. Please note that there is an artist fee available for both curators and artists as well as a production budget for guest curated exhibitions.

Rules:

1. Curatorial Proposals may have up to two artists, and may not include the curator as an exhibiting artist.
2. Potential artists must be contacted by curators prior to submission of proposal to confirm interest.
3. Artists and curators that have previously exhibited with Baxter St at CCNY must wait two full years before exhibiting again and/or submitting another proposal.
4. Curator and artists applying must be located within the tri-state (New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut) area at the time of the exhibition.
5. This opportunity is not designed to support the production of project. Works included in your application should be ready or nearly ready to exhibit.

Guidelines: Baxter St at CCNY is committed to exhibiting work from emerging and under-represented lens-based artists. We are also especially committed to exhibiting:

1. Projects from emerging curators and artist-curators.
2. Work that contributes to the ongoing dialogue about contemporary art practices within lens-based arts or puts a new perspective on historical work.
3. Projects that push curatorial practice in new and interesting directions.
4. Projects that show artists not already represented by New York galleries.

Submission: An overview page with a) name of curator, email address, and website; b) name(s) of the artist(s), where they are based, email addresses, and websites for each; c) a one-paragraph summary of the concept behind the proposal (it can be a paragraph extrapolated from the one-page statement). A one-page statement describing the concept of the exhibition (maximum 300 words). Up to 8 images total, with up to 4 images for each artist if proposing a group show. Images should be jpegs, 800 pixels on the long side. Up to 2 videos can be submitted, up to 3 minutes long max. An image checklist for photo/video work submitted.
